A family of nine from the Rugby area has raised more than £6,000 for charity by cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Denise Gray, who came up with the idea, said:

“We were having a family barbeque and, after a few drinks and watching all the inspiring athletes, committed to doing our own sporting challenge.”

“The training and the ride were tough, but doing it with the people I love definitely made it easier.”

Denise cycled with her husband, Will, and their eldest daughter as well as her two brothers, her sister-in-law, her nieces and her nephew.  Her mum, dad and other sister-in-law drove the support vehicle.

As well as using the bike ride as a chance to push themselves to the limits, the Gray’s decided to raise money at the same time.

One of the charities they supported was World Vision UK.

Will Gray, who chose World Vision, said:

“World Vision gives children and their families living in some really tough places a better chance in life.

“They do this through things like helping provide safe water, improving farming techniques to help fight hunger and ensuring children have a chance of a proper education.

“Even during the hardest parts of this challenge I kept telling myself how easy we have it, compared to the people who World Vision is helping.”

The other charities the family fundraised for were Cancer Research UK and local Rugby charity Hope 4.
During the 12 day challenge, the family cycled more than 900 miles and climbed hills with a combined height of 40,000 feet.

Mr Gray said:

“The hardest part of the challenge was day two in Cornwall and Devon – and the best part was crossing the finish line. We all went over it at the same time and I felt so proud of my family, both for what they had achieved personally and also for raising money that will help people who really need it.”
