Cautious welcome for Government's child refugee announcement

World Vision cautiously welcomed the new announcement today by the UK government to take in an undisclosed number of unaccompanied refugee children from Syria and other conflict areas.

This will be in addition to the 20,000 Syrian refugees the government has pledged to take by 2020, but the exact number has yet to be released. The government has also committed to set aside a new £10 million fund to support vulnerable migrant children in Europe.

Speaking from the Serbia/Macedonia border where refugees are queuing in subzero temperatures, Johan Eldebo, World Vision UK's Senior Humanitarian Advisor said:

"Britain's decision to take more unaccompanied child refugees from Syria is honourable, but to make this real, we need a firm pledge on numbers and a firm commitment to resettle unaccompanied children who are already on the treacherous journey through Europe. Britain and the rest of the EU gets its act together with a clear and co-ordinated approach, desperate families will continue to risk their lives on dangerous boats to reach safety.”
