Learning difficulties are no barrier to success with World Vision Jerusalem, West Bank & Gaza

Nine-year-old Basmala used to hate school. She has a learning difficulty, and struggled to keep up with her classmates in lessons, leading to a lack of self-confidence. When one of her teachers first suggested that she join one of World Vision Jerusalem West Bank Gaza’s after school classes, she was reluctant.

I thought it was just extra school time for me. I wasn’t used to participating in class because I was afraid my answer might be wrong. After attending a few after school classes my feelings changed. The teachers recognised our weaknesses and supported us to overcome them, which helped rebuild our confidence.

- Basmala, 9

World Vision had worked with the local Ministry of Education office in Jenin, West Bank to develop the after school classes for Palestinian children and hire new teaching graduates to run the lessons.

The skills I learned during the extra classes have helped me improve. My teachers have noticed the difference and are praising me. My proudest moment was when I received last year’s school report and I’d gotten 85 percent. My family, especially my mum, were so happy for me. I’m in the fourth grade now and I feel excited and energetic to study hard and enjoy school.

Basmala’s teacher Amal works with our office in the West Bank, and says her student has come a long way in a short time:

Basmala has progressed and improved in many ways. She overcame her problem with stammering. Learning to read made her more confident and proactive in class. We’ve also discovered that Basmala has a talent for acting and giving speeches. She participated in the school morning radio for the first time recently. She shared a poem with everyone and was extremely happy and motivated.
