Identity Crisis in the Lake Chad Basin

With no home, family or jobs refugees in the Sayam Refugee and Displaced People’s Camp in the Lake Chad Basin struggle with their sense of identity. World Vision spoke to three refugees to hear what the crisis has taken from them and how they are trying to cope. Nelly’s family found shelter in one of Armenia’s remote communities, which also happens to be supported by our child sponsors in the UK – Stepanavan, located in the northern part of the country. In Stepanavan, the mayor helped to find the family a small house to live in, and our office provided the family with a cow, as well as the necessary bedding for the new house, and helped to register them in the local schools. Today Nelly and her four siblings are all sponsored children.

Sponsorship brings hope in Armenia

Twin brothers, Hakob and Davit, have both suffered from cerebral palsy since early childhood in Armenia. Unable to go to school due to their condition, the boys live with their mother Julieta and their two elder brothers in desperate living conditions. Their sponsors in the UK have helped them access essential resources and kept the family hopeful for a brighter future.

'I want to be a sponsor one day'

Mary is nine years old, and a sponsored child in Armenia. Her mum came to the country as a refugee when she was nine herself, and their family has struggled to make ends meet. Since becoming a sponsored child, Mary's family has received amazing support from World Vision and her sponsor, and Mary's goal is now to sponsor other children like herself one day.

We left Sisian today, on a rutted road littered with herds of sheep and cattle, not a beautiful smooth dual carriageway in sight! After visiting my sponsored children yesterday I am now going to look at some of the income generating projects I am helping to support. I really believe that funding projects which enable people to help themselves is the best way of helping vulnerable families to climb out of the situations which they find themselves in.
