Identity Crisis in the Lake Chad Basin

With no home, family or jobs refugees in the Sayam Refugee and Displaced People’s Camp in the Lake Chad Basin struggle with their sense of identity. World Vision spoke to three refugees to hear what the crisis has taken from them and how they are trying to cope. Nelly’s family found shelter in one of Armenia’s remote communities, which also happens to be supported by our child sponsors in the UK – Stepanavan, located in the northern part of the country. In Stepanavan, the mayor helped to find the family a small house to live in, and our office provided the family with a cow, as well as the necessary bedding for the new house, and helped to register them in the local schools. Today Nelly and her four siblings are all sponsored children.

Starting over in Stepanavan, with help from child sponsors

In April 2016, eight-year-old Nelly’s family fled their village when heavy fighting broke out between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in the Southeast of the country. Sponsorship brings hope in Armenia

Twin brothers, Hakob and Davit, have both suffered from cerebral palsy since early childhood in Armenia. Unable to go to school due to their condition, the boys live with their mother Julieta and their two elder brothers in desperate living conditions. Their sponsors in the UK have helped them access essential resources and kept the family hopeful for a brighter future.

Hilary's visit to Armenia

Hilary Spurrier visits Anahit in Armenia in 2014 with World Vision UK

The difference clean water makes

World Vision worked with the communities living in the western region of Armenia to improve water access in the area. We met the families and children who are benefiting from new taps, pipes and clean running water - without the fear of health risks.

'I want to be a sponsor one day'

Mary is nine years old, and a sponsored child in Armenia. Her mum came to the country as a refugee when she was nine herself, and their family has struggled to make ends meet. Since becoming a sponsored child, Mary's family has received amazing support from World Vision and her sponsor, and Mary's goal is now to sponsor other children like herself one day.

Think of World Vision next time you eat a packet of crisps...

3-year sponsor Peter recently visited his sponsored child in Armenia for the second time and came back with some reflections on sponsorship, World Vision's work and carb-rich snacks.

Visiting my three sponsored children in Armenia

Ivan, a committed World Vision supporter from Northern Ireland decided to travel the length and breadth of Armenia in order to visit all three of the girls he sponsors, and what an experience it was for him:

Inspiring Armenian Projects

We left Sisian today, on a rutted road littered with herds of sheep and cattle, not a beautiful smooth dual carriageway in sight! After visiting my sponsored children yesterday I am now going to look at some of the income generating projects I am helping to support. I really believe that funding projects which enable people to help themselves is the best way of helping vulnerable families to climb out of the situations which they find themselves in.

Visiting my Sponsored Children in Armenia

This is my third time in Armenia and its beauty never ceases to impress me. I have never been here at this time of year and its lush green landscapes, high mountains and bright blue skies provide a stunning backdrop to our three and a half hour journey to Sisian. I am really excited about seeing my sponsored children Aram and Nareh. I have met them before, but I’m keen to meet their families again and see the difference in their lives since I was last here.
