We pray for the Philippines

Nay, 35, survived Typhoon Haiyan with her six children:

“The typhoon came on Friday morning and started to blow the houses one by one.

I carried my two youngest children, who are one and five years old, while the other four held onto me and walked with me.  My 10-year-old daughter got hit on the head by a piece of falling roof and got injured.
We walked like this from one location to another until we reached a safer building.

The house became crowded with mothers and children until there was no room for us to sit. We stayed standing, holding our children in our arms for the whole night.

The next day was a horrible sight with demolished houses all over the place. We started to clean up and with the remaining parts of the house built temporary sheds to keep our children safe.

We received food items from World Vision. It was a great comfort to us.

With no transportation and roads inaccessible, the greatest need for us now is shelter. Many families use the polythene sacks for the roof. But when it rains (and it rains often) the water still leaks into the house. On such days we don’t have a place to sleep and the children keep awake.”

But the main thing is we survived. We are so thankful to God for protecting us and our children through this.”

Please pray for Nay, her children and community, as they begin the long and challenging journey to rebuild safe places to live, clean water and nutritious food, jobs, hospitals, schools and sanitation

Lord we give thanks that despite enormous challenges, aid is getting through to families in desperate need of water, food and shelter.

Lord, we pray for Nay, her children and community as they start rebuilding their homes, hospitals, schools and sanitation systems.  Please encourage and strengthen them as they tackle these huge challenges together.

Six-year-old Hannah still cries every night for her sister, Divine (7), and brother, Paul (11 months) who were killed by the typhoon. World Vision are beginning to open Child Friendly Spaces which give a safe space for children like Hannah to play and start processing her trauma and grief.  Lord we pray for Hannah and ask you will comfort her, protect her and hold her close in your everlasting arms.

In the wake of the storm, 4.9 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition.  Lord we pray you will help charities like World Vision to get food and clean water to these children quickly.  We pray too that you will guide community and national leaders to find ways of protecting every child from hunger and disease in the coming weeks and months.

Lord, we pray for World Vision’s staff in the Philippines like Crislyn who reflected, “there’s little space to breathe for now and more sleepless nights. Sometimes, I feel tired and emotionally down but the tales of hope from the families we help and target to help have given me many reasons to keep striving”.  As they continue to work around the clock to deliver much needed aid, please strengthen them, refresh them and keep them safe and healthy.
