Haiti: 3 Years On
Three years ago tomorrow Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti, was reduced to near rubble and the country hit by one of the worst humanitarian disasters in living memory.
The earthquake that struck on the afternoon of 12th January 2010 measured A MASSIVE 7.0 on the Richter scale and devastated the lives of millions of people.
In the first four months, World Vision helped more than 2.5 million people, all thanks to the support you were able to give. Over the past three years we’ve helped restock hospitals, treat patients in mobile clinics and reunite families torn apart in the chaos of the quake.
The Report
This week, World Vision released a report detailing the work we’ve done, including the families and children that you have helped us support.
It’s pretty long and sometimes a little dense, so we thought we’d boil it down to help you see just what your money helped us achieve:
40,000 families housed in temporary shelters in the immediate aftermath.
7,700 children cared for in 30 camp-based play and educational centres.
14 hospitals equipped with life-saving supplies enabling the treatment of
412,500 patients as well as
109,000 patients treated in more than a dozen mobile clinics.
300,000+ people treated for or prevented from contracting cholera, 98% of cases successfully treated.
And we consulted with nearly 10,000 children about the reconstruction of the country in the process.
That’s a lot of numbers. A lot of very big numbers. But each one of those represents people, real people that your generosity has helped us to get back on their feet.
We’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and you should be, too.
We understand that sometimes when you give to appeals it can be hard (and a long time) before you truly understand what your money has done. But we want you to know that your donations do make a real, tangible difference to the lives of people like Marceline and her daughter.
Thank you for all of your support, past, present and future. Thank you for helping us achieve the things we can. Thank you for helping us make sure children get to experience life in all its fullness.
