Ecuador’s worst earthquake in almost 30 years claims hundreds of lives

World Vision has leaped into action to help communities hit by a massive earthquake in Ecuador on Saturday April 16.

World Vision is handing out food, water and hygiene kits to survivors as well as essential items like nappies. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused devastation across much of the country, and claimed the lives of at least 272 people. The regions of Manabi, Esmeraldas, Los Rios, Santa Elena, Guayas and Santo Domingo are among the worst affected.

Jose Luis Ochoa, World Vision director, said: “Our prayers go out for the people of Ecuador, especially those who have lost homes and loved ones. This was a truly terrifying event felt across the country. Our first priority is to provide temporary shelter and aid kits and keep children safe."

World Vision emergency teams are using their expertise to help children and their families deal with the shock and emotional trauma caused by the earthquake. We are setting up Child Friendly Spaces to help children cope with the uncertainty and fear that an earthquake creates.

World Vision has worked in Ecuador since 1978 and currently assists some 60,000 children and youths through education, life-skills, health, and protection initiatives.
