World Vision UK has joined an emergency DEC appeal backed by 14 of Britain’s leading aid agencies.

The members of the DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee) launched the joint fundraising appeal today to raise vital funds for the survivors of the Indonesia earthquake and tsunami. Efforts are being accelerated to deliver aid and supplies to the 200,000 people in urgent need of food, water and shelter. More than 1400 people have been confirmed dead since the disaster struck last week, and 65,000 homes destroyed.

DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed said, “DEC member charities and their local partners are working closely with the Indonesian authorities to get aid to those who urgently need it. They are helping survivors to cope with the trauma of the last few days. As the full scale of the disaster unfolds, they are providing emergency relief and are ready to help devastated communities to rebuild their lives.

Since the DEC launched 65 years ago, they have raised more than £1.5billion to help people devastated by conflict and natural disasters.

World Vision was among the first to arrive in the disaster zone, and has now set up water points and emergency toilet facilities. We have also distributed emergency shelters, and hygiene kits to stop disease.

Tim Pilkington, World Vision UK’s chief executive said: “The full extent of the disaster is only now becoming clear. Thousands of families desperately need food, clean water, medicine and shelter. By pooling our expertise and people power as members of the DEC, we can reach those in need quicker and more effectively.

“The terror of recent days has left children deeply traumatised. We must help them.”
